Columbians are beginning to pack their bags and jet set for the holidays, but just because their time zones are changing doesn’t mean their wardrobes have to.
Trends are often universal, and Columbia exemplifies this through its diverse shopping options in The District.
While shops such as Elly’s Couture line their walls with brands from Los Angeles and boutiques such as MUSE Clothing pride themselves on local and American designers,Swank ships nine different Australian lines and an English line to its boutique.
Swank owner Erin Wagoner praised the foreign brands’ spring/summer lines, but their loose-fit knits and metallic pieces for the cooler seasons exemplify some of the year’s most popular trends.
The Boyfriend Sweater

Oversize is still in. From fuzzy sweaters to baggy denim, the “boyfriend” style continues to sell across the globe. Model Kalynn Jones wears a soft satin maxi dress under a cozy sweater for a chic look. Model Rebecca Bogle poses in a simple knit sweater from the United kingdom and distressed denim from Australia.

Metallics

Swank’s foreign lines exemplify the metallic trend with subtle embellishments and shimmering leggings, while Elly’s Couture showcases it in a translucent top handle bag.

Faux leather and faux fur

Vegan animal skins have been an ongoing trend in the US for several seasons. MUSE pairs a furry jacket with a velvet two-piece. Bogle wears a sleek abstract number by Australian brand Elliatt.

Not only do recent boutique openings reflect Columbia’s overall business and population boom, but the presence of foreign lines represents Columbia’s melting pot of tastes, aesthetics and cultures.
